Layton is a city in Davis County, Utah. It is a large suburban community located only a few miles away from the eastern coast of the Great Salt Lake.
According to the United States Census Bureau of 2000, Layton has a population of more than 58,000 people. The city has a total area of 20.8 square miles (0.1 square miles water) with a population density of over 2,500 people per square mile. It is located at high altitudes of over 4,000 feet above sea level.
The racial demographics of Layton are 89.91% White, 1.61% African American, 0.53% Native American, 2.08% Asian, 0.27% Pacific Islander, 3.09% from other races, and 2.52% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race make up 6.96% of the population.
Layton has more than 5,500 households, many of which are fairly affluent. The median income for a household in the city is $52,128, and the median income for a family is $57,193.
Layton is home to a large educational system part of the Davis School District with a dozen elementary schools, two junior high schools, and two high schools (Layton & Northridge). The city also has a branch of Weber State University and a campus of Utah Career College.
